The Great Bend Newports

 

All Accounted For in Great Bend, Kansas
The ultra-compact two bedroom Newport is a rare Lustron Model. Just 39 have been reported out of the approximately 2600 Lustrons built according to . With nine in Great Bend, Kansas, more were built here than in any other city or state. (See state by state inventory at bottom of page.)

The Newport was notable for its extra low price -- $4,000; its compact size -- 713 Sq. Ft.; and its circulating warm air heating system. (As reported at Lustron Preservation.Org Website)

In the summer of 2009, Dee Johnson of Great Bend photographed all nine of the Lustron Model 023 Newports in Great Bend. All retain their original Lustron exterior panels and roofs. And most have their original Lustron windows. Seven of them have the same type of door awning. It is not known if this awning was a standard Lustron accessory. Here are the Great Bend Newports as they look in 2009 at age 57+.

More About The Newport
Lustron dwellers will instantly recognize the extra compact dimensions of this model and the doorways on the gable sides. With the Newport Model 023, Lustron Corporation attempted to improve its reputation after failing in earlier models to deliver on its promise of a $4,000 Lustron home. Also, it is the Newport that has an improved heating system that most other Lustron homes never had. Warm air blowing into the rooms through vents was certainly more effective than the radiant ceiling heating provided in most other Lustrons.

Eleven of this model were built in Kansas, nine in Missouri and five in Ohio. Between one and three were built in ten other states for a total of 39 known to have been built. See Breakdown in table below.
